Futuring & Innovation: How External Forces Can Impact Industry

The rise and fall of cigarette smoking show how an industry can boom and bust.  The high watermark for the popularity of cigarettes occurred during the First and Second World Wars.  Tobacco companies shipped millions of packages of cigarettes to soldiers on the battle-front, thereby establishing thousands of addicted, constant consumers through their endeavors.  Soldiers received cigarettes with their food and vitamin supplements called C-rations (Tobacco-Free Life, 2016).  In the 1920s, more women deemed it socially acceptable to smoke, prompted by advertising campaigns to paint the habit in a feminine and mild-mannered light.  As a result, female smokers tripled in the US by 1935.  In November 1988 represented a determining moment in the history of the cigarette industry in the United States when 46 states, the foreign city-state of the District of Columbia, and five US territories sued the cigarette manufacturers.  The lawsuits sought out victims' compensation funds to treat smoking-related illnesses.  The group of private lawyers targeted four companies:

Philip Morris,

Lorillard,

Brown & Williamson,

R. J. Reynolds

Four states reached separate agreements, including Texas, Florida, Minnesota, and Mississippi.  The settlements released manufacturers from liability to the states for health care costs caused by smoking.  People have and can continue to pursue the manufacturers for injuries separate from the MSA.  The impact was the tobacco companies got forced to raise cigarette prices and fund initiates such as the "Truth" counter-marketing campaign that aimed to reduce smoking and permanent prohibitions on marketing to children and adolescents.

A significant aspect of the landmark tobacco settlement represented the first time the civil justice system aimed to correct the legislature's failure, according to Joe Rice, the lead counsel for 26 jurisdictions.   The main benefit appears to have been bringing awareness to the detrimental health aspects of smoking.  How the state education funds get spent had come under fire.  During private litigation, individuals' main challenge was free choice to smoke or not to smoke.  Their cases got bolstered by an abundance of evidence that Big Tobacco engaged in massive deception and lies per Bryte Johnson, director of the American Cancer Society Action Network, Inc. (Burtka, 2016).

The tobacco example can illustrate a potential impact for the socio-technical plan of merging man and machine.  A similar circumstance becomes evidenced by lies and deception to introduce new technologies into the living body.  The exploding cases of Covid-19 vaccine injuries and deaths could represent another blockbuster case for the lawyers when the truth gets widely known and socialized among the population (K & Renz, 2022).

The exposure example becomes pertinent due to the revelation of the Pentagon's Defense Medical Epidemiology Database (DMED).  DMED is the Premier database in the world on health trends in Epidemiology.  It focuses on US soldiers.  All the data comes through the Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS), which consists of the health medical records for all of our soldiers.  US Taxpayers pay millions of dollars annually for technicians to monitor the data on DMED to look out for any health trends that could adversely impact soldiers and to ensure high-quality data.  Three Department of Defense (DoD) whistleblowers have come out due to the explosion of Covid-19 Vaccine deaths and injuries exploding from an approximate average of two million per year to in 2021, a 988% increase to 21,512,583 as of January 19, 2022.  Nervous system disorders increased by 968% from an average of approximately 80,000 per year to 863,013 nervous system disorders in 2021, and Project Salus' vaccine injury monitoring system 5.6 million mapped Medicare beneficiaries 300% increases in injuries.  It shows that the DoD is aware that the Vaccine is killing our soldiers and remained silent except for three whistleblowers.

I believe that the revelations of the truth, and the citizen journalists spreading the information concealed by mainstream media, the medical establishment, and other "health agencies" will become known.  Lawsuits, and the exposure of bio-ethical violations, will shine a light on the negative health impacts of Big Pharma in the same way that sunlight became the best disinfectant of the concealed data on deaths and injuries that exposed Big Tobacco's health injuries data to sunlight.
